Know these cold
- The OSI model: Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application — each layer adds a header (encapsulation) when sending, removes it when receiving.
- TCP/IP model (4 layers): Network Access, Internet, Transport, Application — maps to the OSI model.
- IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses; IPv6 uses 128-bit hex addresses written in eight 16-bit groups separated by colons.
- Subnetting: CIDR notation (e.g., /24) indicates how many bits are the network portion; remaining bits are the host portion.
- Common ports: HTTP 80, HTTPS 443, FTP 20/21, SSH 22, Telnet 23, SMTP 25, DNS 53, DHCP 67/68, RDP 3389.
